And Then Hurricane Matthew Crashed October

Hello friends!

I’m collecting myself and basking in gratitude. My family and friends came through the storm relatively unscathed.

The boys, our cat, and I left Savannah voluntarily last Wednesday after school was cancelled and drove to my mom’s outside of Atlanta.

Gil stayed to tie up some loose ends at work and arrived Thursday night with our two large dogs.

My mother welcomed us, and overall this extended stay hasn’t been bad — she and I typically have a three-day maximum, but we’ve both worked hard to remain on our best behavior.

Gil went back to Savannah last night. We still don’t have power, but our house was in relatively good shape — no major structural damage, only a minor fence issue and a few trees down.

The kids are out of school the rest of this week, so once power’s restored we’ll be heading back.

I’m doing my best to stay present, and I’ve been surprisingly calm. This is by far the largest natural disaster I’ve ever experienced, and while it has been scary and trying on numerous levels, I feel extremely fortunate.

We’ve been shown so much love and kindness on this trip, so I’m going to do my best to focus on that, and for now I’ll spare you some of the inevitable challenges of our inpromptu getaway.

Words are somewhat failing me this  evening, but I wanted to give you an update.

Lots of love and gratitude to each of you.

    • Thank you so much for stopping by and commenting. I really love your blog. I haven’t done much blog reading lately, but I thoroughly enjoyed your post and made a note to take a closer look soon. I went to three different colleges in Alabama (took me a while to get on the right track), so I have a lot of love for the state. Hope you make it back to Savannah! I agree it’s a lovely city and I’m encouraged by how our community has responded to Hurricane Matthew. Clean up is coming along nicely!

  2. I’m glad to hear that you are ok. I live just outside of Charleston and I certainly agree with your assessment that it was things got scary. I hope cleanup and repair goes smoothly!

    • Thank you so much! I hope your relatives are getting along okay in the aftermath. Our yards are still a mess, and we are only halfway through the fence repair, but I’ll take it. It was pretty scary.
