View From the Couch

So THIS happened over the weekend:

Yes, friends, I jacked up my knee, so I’m practicing RICE. That’s Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation.

I forget that I’m clinically hyper until something of this nature forces me to sit still for extended periods of time. This is day three of this RICE jazz and I am over it.

I’m whining, but thankfully this is a very minor injury.

Gil and I impulsively joined a mixed doubles tennis league, and I twisted my knee about ten minutes into our first match.

I was NOT happy.

I was less happy that we got our asses kicked, because as much as I hate to admit it, I am a competitive little cuss when it comes to sports and do not like to lose. Sigh.

I’ve had a recurring knee “thing” since 2005 when I sort of heaved myself down a mountain in Vail, CO.

Gil and I were visiting friends and checking out a potential work project for him. I had recently quit my job in outside sales on a whim after a somewhat life-altering work lunch with Larry the superintendent at Hooters. ***note to self*** I must write this story in the oh-so-near future.

I was beyond pumped about the possibility of moving out west, but alas, it wasn’t for Gil and we landed in southern Georgia instead.

Still, we got a nearly free trip to Vail out of the deal. I’ll have to locate some pics from that trip.

Vail is breathtaking, but the blue run was bit more advanced than other places I’ve skied, and I ended up with a minor meniscal tear in my right knee. I did physical therapy and it’s been fine, but I’m pretty sure the medial collateral ligament is off (stretched perhaps), and I’ve been prone to knee sprains/twists ever since.

After Sunday’s tennis incident, I called my physical therapist friend and she assessed the situation as best she could over the phone and recommended RICE for a week. If there’s no swelling (thus far there’s been none) then I should be okay to return to normal activity, but I’ll need my brace for tennis. Naturally she advised that I have it checked out more thoroughly at a local clinic, but we already owe a year’s salary (a slight exaggeration but you get the idea) to the local place here after Piers’ broken foot and Gil’s tendinitis.

For now I’m RICE-ing and will re-assess after a week. It’s almost 100%, but I need to stay on the couch. Blah.

I’ve had a few work things to do and have been knocking those out from the couch. I have to teach on Friday but should be fine by then. I’m beyond grateful that I have a flexible schedule.

I was midway through cleaning/organizing the bookshelf below when we left for our match on Sunday, and I’ve yet to complete my project.

Fancy Santa and Lolly the Snowman were left out of the Christmas boxes when we packed up our decorations, so they’ve been hanging out in 2017. I rather like them and am in no rush to put them away. Perhaps posting this will inspire me to get on that bookshelf and finish what I started:

I finished Big Little Lies  by Liane Moriarty.

I LOVED this book, but the verdict is still out for me on the HBO series staring Reece Witherspoon, Laura Dern and Nicole Kidman. I

‘m three episodes in and it’s just okay – a bit of a letdown after the book thus far. I listened to a good bit of the book, and the narrator was phenomenal.

Her name is Caroline Lee and I want to listen to everything she’s done. I read so much more since I discovering audiobooks.

I’ll have to do a full review of Big Little Lies. I’m a bit late to the party, and I know Liane Moriarty books aren’t everyone’s cup (flashback to my former book club’s lively discussion of The Husband’s Secret — let’s just say there were some strong opinions on that one), but I can’t get enough of her characters and their shenanigans.

The azaleas are blooming, and I’m soccer-moming most afternoons, but life is moving along.

Piers swore he’d never play soccer again after this season way back when, but he’s back at it. Wallace didn’t want to do soccer and is playing tennis instead (let’s hope he inherited his dad’s sturdy knees and not mine.)

My curtains are down, so maybe you can see the lovely view from my front window. (Yes, another “from the couch shot.”) Cheers to spring and sunnier days! We have some amazing trees in our neighborhood:

I hope you’re getting a taste of spring wherever you are – or at least some pleasant weather if you’re reading from the southern hemisphere.

How are you? What’s new in your world?

  1. I’m so sorry about your knee, and I’m glad you’re doing RICE! I’ve had ACL reconstruction & torn cartilage repaired in my knee, and believe or not, arnica gel really helps when I have pain and/or bruising. It’s cheap and easy to use. I like Boiron the most, Hylands comes in second. You can find them at stores like CVS.

“Big Little Lies” was filmed near us in Monterey.I want to see it for several reasons: the scenery, the actors, and (possibly) some extras I know. I’m glad you loved the book and that you discovered Caroline Lee.

I have our curtains down too. I cannot WAIT for spring to arrive. It has been a cold winter filled with record-breaking storms, mudslides, and flooding. I’m over that!

I’m proud of you for taking care of yourself – it must be very tough to have to sit still, yet you’ve been doing it as much as you can. I’m sure I’ve written this before at least 5 or 10 times, but I’ll write it again:

    YOU ROCK!!!

    • I read this, got distracted, and never reaponded. The knee is much better — and thanks for reminding me about arnica gel. I picked some up at CVS on Sunday.

Big Little Lies (the show) is getting better. The scenery and filming overall is one of the best parts. Monterey is beautiful! I also like the music. It’s definitely worth checking out. I think it’s only on HBO for now. We have an HBO GO subscription that I was about to cancel…. but I’m having second thoughts now because of BLL.

Thanks for the kind words. Hope you’re having a good week. It is FREEZING here!! xoxo

  2. And learn to breeeeeeathe 😀
One of the hardest things to learn for us humans 😀
You are now being given the chance to meditate and ask your heart…what do you really want in your life. Most other people are buried in life and don’t have time to look…your being given an opportunity.
    Have fun 😀
