Summer Will Always Have My Heart, Heat and All

Do you prefer Summer? Winter? Spring? Fall?

Heat, humidity, all of it, I will take summer any day.

My friend Natalie sent me a pic of her dash today around 2pm.

118 degrees F.

I was stunned.

I know a vehicle parked in the sun shows an exaggerated temperature, but that’s high even in Savannah this time of year.

Still, my skin is clear. My joints feel good. My allergies are in check, which is not the case in spring and fall. There’s a decent breeze coming off of the water. We even have showers most afternoons that provide relief.

Tennis didn’t last long this morning. Two sets and we were done.

Holly and Parker behaved themselves, and we all had a good time.

Holly and Natalie had afternoon obligations, so it was just Parker and me hanging by her beautiful pool.

Piers graduated from high school in May and will start college in August. He’s going to live at home for a year (his choice) so he can work and save money.

I have mixed feelings. Gil and I both went away to college right after high school, and I for one loved it. It was a rite of passage. I always assumed that my kids would do the same.

Piers came to us midway through his senior year and proclaimed that he was not ready. He said he had watched too many of his friends go off to school and have to return because their grades were bad.

He said he knew himself and that he would stay out partying and not go to class.

Okay then…

I wasn’t about to force him to go away to school after that proclamation.

He’a working three jobs this summer. One is with Gil in his office where he’s able to shadow different positions and possibly find the makings of an actual career.

He goes to the beach at 6am everyday and sets up beach furniture.

His third job is serving at a restaurant. That kid will hustle. He has some maturing to do, but he’s figuring it out, and I’m excited for his future.

Wallace is working at the same restaurant as Piers, and he also plays in a band that has gigs all around the islands, so he has been pretty occupied all summer, too.

Wallace is heading into his senior year of high school in a couple of weeks, so we get to start all over again with senior activities and college applications.

It’s all exciting, mostly. I try my best to not lament the state of our world as my children launch. I have faith that my kids and other young adults will figure things out, bumpy as the path may be.

There’s lots of praying and meditating and practicing gratitude because I know I have so much to be thankful for.

Here I am again at almost midnight churning out a blog post.

My big fluffy dog is snoring loudly at my feet.

I hope all of you are enjoying your summer. Maybe it’s cold where you are. Maybe you’re baking like me.

I’d love to hear about your summer. What’s your favorite season?

  1. Congratulations to Piers! That’s a big transition. I get where you’re coming from. As someone who lived at home through my college years, I have no regret. It set me up well financially to move out – and not look back – at 25. He has the rest of his life to figure out adulthood. 😊 Good luck and enjoy the summer!

    • Yes! I’m sure I get more of an actual fall here than you do in Hawaii, but I still miss a true fall. Even where I grew up in GA is way different than down here on the coast in terms of fall. Down here we’re all just happy that the highs are in the 80s once Sept/Oct hits. I do my best to sneak away to Atlanta or North Carolina so I can see the leaves change.

  2. Love this! I adore summer. I feel it’s truly my favorite but I have glimmers about the other seasons too. I love that I get to experience four seasons here because just as I get sick of one, the other enters the scene.

  3. I am definitely an autumn person. But you know, in the midwest autumn follows with snow, so spring is petty cool too, watching everything come to life. So far, no allergies I am grateful for that. But I also don’t want to be that person (anymore!) that complains about the baking. After all, summer brings the best tomatoes of the year! And all that green….it really is beautiful.

    • Midwest autumns are so beautiful! I miss seeing the leaves turn. I do my best to get away for a weekend during the fall so I can experience a true fall. Fall is nice here, but different – mostly just a nice reprieve from 100 degree temps.
