” I do think we have somewhat of an influence over our children through our actions and how we respond to them and situations within our realm of experiences. Also how we as a society-at-large contribute to the feeling of entitlement.” I absolutely agree with this. I cringe when my kids whine, but I recognize that they are learning, and I have to model the behaviors I want to see in them. It’s a process. I also have to take into account where they are developmentally and understand that often my expectations as an adult are unrealistic for a 5 & 4 yo.

Interesting article. I used to mistakenly think parents had full control over whether their kids whined or not. I do think we have somewhat of an influence over our children through our actions and how we respond to them and situations within our realm of experiences. Also how we as a society-at-large contribute to the feeling of entitlement.
I’m not a whiner by nature. I try to communicate as clearly as possible & I’ve worked really hard to strip away any sense of entitlement my boys might have (there are only community items & I try to live as simply as possible.) Having just said that, it still boggles my mind when my eldest at 6 disintegrated to a whiny mess the instant he feel misunderstood or maligned. His whining doesn’t revolve around toys, but still stems from his general viewpoint that the world is not lining up the way he thinks it should. Perhaps it is stems from frustration for his inability to communication clearly & shape the world as he wishes to see it? I’m not sure. Whatever it is, he whines and my patience wears out.
Apart from taking the completely opposite reaction to his whining (being crisp, logical & almost brusque) I haven’t found another method to counteract his whining. At this point I’m hoping he just grows out of it, but time will tell if my best is “good enough.”
Looking forward to reading your reaction to the article. I’m sure it will jog more ideas and feedback.
